Adult women often have problems with acne, and do not understand why. The reality is that adult acne can last in a woman’s 30’s, 40’s and even 50’s. This is often deep-seated acne that can cause tender and inflamed pimples, which usually will occur on the lower face, including the jaw line and chin area.
This acne condition can be one that is carried over from teen years or one that has begun in adulthood and usually affects women rather than men. One of the reasons for this is due to hormonal fluctuations, starting or stopping birth control medication, and it is caused by excess sebum, better known as oil in the body.
For some women it can be a hereditary problem or acne can be brought on by stress in some women. The body response to the higher production of androgens caused by stress often leads to the hormonal stimulation of the oil glands and hair follicles. This can cause increased acne in some women and flare-ups that might not have occurred without the increased androgens in the body.
Other causes that can increase acne in women are oily sunscreen, makeup, and greases in other products that can promote what is known as acne cosmetica.
