Most of the acne medications out there will not interfere with breast feeding. This is not as sensitive of a situation as using acne medications while you’re actually pregnant, because most of the ingredients are metabolized in the body before they have a chance to make it to the milk glands. As a rule of thumb, most topical applications will not have any adverse effects on your breast milk. The problems come in with oral solutions, which can take longer to metabolize. The amounts of the ingredients that actually make it into your system can’t be metabolized as quickly as the smaller amounts that are absorbed from topical medicines. Most of the oral antibiotics are okay with breast feeding, but they can put your child at a larger risk for thrush. Only take these if it is absolutely necessary. Erythromycin is a commonly acceptable solution for use with pregnant and/or breast feeding women. Other safe alternatives for acne treatment while breast feeding include: Proactive, metronidazole, topical Retin-A, Adapalene, and azelaic acid. You should always stay away from Accutane when dealing with children. Keep in mind that while Adapalene, Azelaic acid, and Clindamycin may be acceptable alternatives, but they are still not as safe as Erythromycin. Use Erythromycin if possible before considering any of the other more invasive products.
