Yes, there is always research being done in the treatment of acne and it will continue as each different type of acne responds different to each medication or treatment. While one medication will clear acne for one person it may not work at all on another person, so for this reason there will be research into acne causes and its treatment.

Clinical trials are conducted to test the medication or treatment to ensure that it will work for most people and also to see what type of side effects if any are associated with the medication.  This medication testing is required by companies that are manufacturing medication that will need to be dispensed by prescription and also by companies that will sell their medication or treatment over the counter. These companies must prove that their treatment or medication does what they state it will do before placing it on the market and advertising it as an acne medication.
