There are lots of medications that are used for acne that shouldn’t be taken while being pregnant, but on the contrary, there are a host of medicines that can be used while you’re pregnant. You always want to talk to your doctor about what is safe and what isn’t, but the problem with that is that there are contradictions between what different doctors and the FDA think. One doctor may say it’s safe, while another may disagree. Better safe than sorry I say, and you should feel that way as well when you’re expecting. You should definitely stay away from Accutane, Retin-A, Differin, and Tazorac, as well as any orally ingested antibiotics such as minocycline, doxycycline, and tetracycline which studies have shown will stain your baby’s teeth. There can be some serious side effects associated with the health of your baby if you use these medications.
There are some alternatives that are safe to use for you while you’re growing a little you. Salicylic acid is safe and is used in some well known products like Clearasil Clearstick, Neutrogena Clear Pore Treatment, and Stri-Dex. You also could use a topical application of erythromycin, which is in some gels and/or ointments. Clindamycin is a topical antibiotic that can be prescribed for use on pregnant mothers, and lastly Azelaic acid is another active ingredient in some products that is safe. Overall just research the products, and keep yourself one hundred percent informed to make the safest decision that you can. |
