My Doctor Prescribed a Retinoid Topical Treatment Should I Stop Taking Vitamin A? |
Retinoid treatments even though they have properties of vitamin A do not mean that it is necessary to stop taking the vitamin. The reason for this is that while it has the same properties, it can not cause a toxic level of vitamin A in the body, which is the danger associated with this vitamin. Unlike other vitamins it does not leave the body and can reach a toxic level when more than the body can use is taken.
When this vitamin does reach a toxic level in the body it can cause blisters, and a peeling effect on the skin. When the body does not have enough vitamin A the skin can become scaly and dry. The topical treatments with retinoids are prepared to have a maximum effect on shedding cells that line the sebaceous follicle. |
